Round Robin
by
Opal Goff & Jen Swanson
This
year we have a new, exciting twist on our traditional round robin. Thank
you to Susie Shepherdson for suggesting the idea. Her other guild
has been enjoying this exchange for a number of years. We're
hoping you will, too.
BOX EXCHANGE -Here's how it works.
Each participant will choose a block design - not too complicated - and
make up one sample in the colors and style of her choice. She will
bring the block, along with instructions how to make it and her
guidelines for color and fabrics to the October meeting. She will
NOT include any identifying information in the packet - this is
anonymous! The packet will be placed in a numbered box. Each
participant will be given a chart telling her which number box to take
home each month. She will make up one block following the
directions in the box, add her block to the box, return the box to the
next meeting and get another box. In May each participant will get
her original box back with a total of 8 blocks to make a quilt top.
Note: To maintain anonymity, I will provide identical boxes. There
will be a $2 entry fee to cover the cost of the boxes.
All this will be reviewed at the September meeting and there will be a
handout to take home, but if you want to start thinking about your block
now, here are some guidelines:- Pick a block design that is not too
complex. Remember there are all skill levels participating and it
shouldn't take anyone all month long to make your block! No paper
piecing, curved seams or appliqué. Don't underestimate the impact
of a simple block.
If
you choose a VERY simple block, you may request each participant to make
2 blocks.- Pick a finished block size between 8 and 14 inches- Choose a
color scheme and/or fabric type - batiks? thirties? calico? plaids and
stripes? Amish solids? Will you provide one fabric? Will it
go in the same spot in each block or will each person use it as desired?
Or will that fabric just be a guideline for the color palette, not used
in the blocks but saved for borders or lattices?
Please plan to provide no more that 2 fabrics in your packet, allowing
each participant to choose fabrics from her stash to make parts of your
blocks.
Beginners, we welcome you to participate. I'm hoping this project
is less intimidating than the usual round robin. Please contact me
if you think you'd like to participate but are worried about whether
your skills are up to it.
More details at the September meeting.
